10 Tips for Adults to Find the Christmas Spirit

Christmas is the time of year when you are supposed to feel all cozy and happy, but as an adult, it can be really hard to find that Christmas spirit. Sometimes we forget about magic during Christmas time. This post will show you how to get into the Christmas mood and find the magic in Christmas!

How do you feel about the upcoming Christmas? When you are a child, Christmas is all about magic, but when you’re grown-up, Christmas seems to be just another day. But there are many things that can make Christmas special for an adult! This post will help you find the Christmas spirit and get in the mood for Christmas time.

If you are stuck in an adult humdrum and ask yourself: “Why am I not feeling the holiday spirit?” here are ten tips to get into the Christmas cheer:

  1. Watch Christmas movies
  2. Listen to Christmas music
  3. Decorate your home
  4. Write Santa a letter (who said adults can’t write letters to Santa?)
  5. Make a gingerbread house (or buy it, if you are as horrible as I am at cooking 😜)
  6. Light lots of candles around the house
  7. Drink hot chocolate (or mulled wine, you’re an adult after all!)
  8. Go for a walk to take in the Christmas decorations in the city center, get yourself outside
  9. Call your old friend or a family member
  10. Wrap yourself up in a soft warm blanket on Christmas eve and make a list of wishes (or to do list, whatever you call it) for the coming year

Watch Christmas movies

Christmas movies are the best way to get in the mood for Christmas. So once you’re finished with your adult duties, make yourself comfortable on the couch and watch a Christmas movie! Here is a list of my favorites:

  • Four Christmases 2008

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn are a hilarious couple that gets stuck spending Christmas with each other’s families.

  • The Holiday 2006

Two women, Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet), swap homes for the holidays and end up finding love in the most unexpected places.

  • Last Christmas 2019 (Oh I love this film!)

A young woman (Emilia Clarke) falls in love with a man (Henry Golding) who is hiding a deep secret from her.

  • Love Actually 2003

This classic tells the story of various people in London and their love lives during Christmas time.

  • Home Alone and Home Alone 2

Classic films about a young boy who is left home alone and has to protect his house from burglars.

Listen to Christmas music

There’s nothing like listening to Christmas music while wrapping presents or drinking hot chocolate! The most modern classic Christmas songs are “All I want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey and “Last Christmas” by Wham.

Pro tip – sing the Christmas song along with the singer. Do you dare? 😜

Decorate your home

One of the best things about Christmas is all the decorations! Whether you like traditional Christmas decorations or something more quirky, get creative and decorate your home for the holidays. I personally love to go all out with Christmas lights, wreaths, and Christmas trees!

I haven’t decorated my home since I moved out of my parents. But last year I ordered a Christmas tree on Amazon along with all the decorations and had a great time decorating my apartment. And why didn’t I do it before? This brought me so much Christmas joy!

Write Santa Claus a letter

As an adult, you don’t get letters from Santa anymore. However, there is no reason why you can’t write one and drop it in a mailbox. I guarantee that writing a letter to Santa Claus will make you feel the Christmas spirit!

You can write a simple letter, but it is more fun if you decorate the envelope yourself. Write your Christmas wishes in an old-fashioned ink pen or type them up – whatever you choose, make sure it’s special!

Make a gingerbread house (or buy one)

Making a gingerbread house is a classic Christmas activity that will always make you feel festive. If you’re not the best cook in the world, don’t worry – there are plenty of premade gingerbread houses out there that just need to be put together.

If you are a busy adult and don’t have time for these childish activities at least buy some Christmas cookies, you won’t regret it! 😉

Light lots of candles around the house

Candles are fantastic for creating a Christmassy atmosphere. You can light them everywhere – on your windowsill, coffee table, or even in front of the mirror when you get ready for New Year’s Eve party. Let them burn throughout the whole festive season! This helps to get the holiday spirit especially if you live somewhere where it’s cold and dark during the winter.

Drink hot chocolate or mulled wine

If you want to feel the Christmas vibe, there is nothing better than drinking hot chocolate in front of a fireplace or while looking out your window at the falling snow. And if you add some spices like cinnamon and cloves it becomes even more special.

If this picture is too sweet for you go for mulled wine. It is a delicious Christmas drink that will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s perfect for drinking while decorating your home or just sitting around with your friends and family!

Walk around the city to take in the Christmas decorations

If your city is decorated for Christmas, take a walk and enjoy the festive atmosphere. You’ll see Christmas trees, lights, and all sorts of other decorations – it’s definitely worth taking a look!

Don’t forget to attend a Christmas market. I wrote a whole post about Christmas markets in Lisbon. So if you happen to be in Lisbon during Christmas time you might find it helpful.

Christmas markets are one of my favorite things about the holidays. There’s nothing like browsing through stalls and buying presents for your loved ones!

Call an old friend or a family member

When was the last time you spoke with your best friend from school?

Christmas is the perfect time to catch up with friends and family you might not have seen in a while. Why not give them a call and arrange to meet up? You can have Christmas lunch or dinner together or just meet for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Make a list of wishes for the coming year

Writing a list of things you want to achieve in the coming year is not only a good way to spend time but also helpful for making dreams come true. Just put it on your fridge so that every time you see it, you’ll be reminded about what’s important to you and why!

I personally love going through this list when New Year’s Eve comes around and making resolutions. I usually try to do at least a few things from the list every month so that by the end of the year, I’ve achieved most of them!

Whether you’re an adult or not, there are things that can help to get into the holiday mood and make it more magical! Try out some of the ideas today. If these activities seem too childish, remember the true meaning of Christmas is about giving and joy. Even if it’s just in small ways like writing a letter or decorating your home. Have fun with Christmas while celebrating the most wonderful time of the year!

I hope these tips will help you get in the Christmas spirit! What are your favorite ways to get into the holiday mood? Let me know in the comments below!
