7 Places to see Christmas Trees and Lights in Lisbon

This post will take you through seven magical places where you can catch Christmas lights and decorations in Lisbon to create your holiday mood!

It’s that time of the year again. The twinkling lights are up, Christmas decorations are on full display, and it seems like everyone is in a festive mood.

I think Festive decorations in Lisbon are some of the most beautiful in Europe. The city is draped with dancing lights and Christmas trees, making it the perfect destination to get into the holiday spirit.

Here are seven magical places to see Christmas decorations in Lisbon:

Rua Garrett

First on the list is Rua Garrett, a narrow street located in the Chiado district of Lisbon. The street is lined with beautiful buildings adorned with twinkling lights, making for a truly magical sight.

This year it’s decorated especially magically. The street is illuminated with hanging twinkling jellyfish, making it look like an underwater wonderland. This installation is one of the most beautiful decorations I’ve ever seen!

Praça Luís de Camões (Camoes Square)

Another place where Christmas lights will make you feel like you’ve been transported into a magical world is Praça Luis de Camoes, also known as Largo do Chiado in Portuguese. The square is home to a statue of the famous Portuguese poet, Luís de Camões, and is surrounded by beautiful buildings with intricate decorations.

This year they installed an illuminated sphere in the center of the square, which looks truly magical at night. During the day, the sphere looks like a globe with continents made from leaves.

Avenida da Liberdade

Avenida da Liberdade is a wide avenue in the center of Lisbon. The avenue is home to many beautiful buildings and expensive boutiques. It’s also one of the most beautifully lit up and decorated avenues in Lisbon during Christmas. It’s the perfect place to take a walk with your loved ones.

The twinkling lights strung overhead all over the street provides the perfect atmosphere for window shopping or the real thing.

I always feel like I’m in a Christmas movie when I walk down this street.

Praça Dom Pedro IV (Rossio Square)

Rossio Square is another popular spot in the city center for enjoying the Christmas atmosphere. In this square, you will find a large tree that’s lit up with hundreds of twinkling bulbs and surrounded by festive decorations. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for some Christmas cheer!

A pleasant bonus: there is a Christmas Market in Rossio Square where you can pick up some souvenirs for your friends and family. Check my recent post about Christmas markets in Lisbon.

Christmas Tree in Praça do Comércio

This square located in the heart of Lisbon decorated with a Christmas tree with over 20,000 sparkling lights! It’s impressive how they manage to fit so many sparkles in such a large tree.

The Christmas tree in Praça do Comércio changes every year. Last year’s tree was covered with green and white lights. What makes that tree interesting is that you may enter inside it. There is an area where you can sit and enjoy the lights.

Rua Augusta

If you’re looking for a more romantic setting, Rua Augusta is a great place to visit. The street is beautifully lit up with lanterns and magical lights, and there are often musicians playing Christmas carols. It’s a great place to take a walk and enjoy the festive atmosphere. You can stop for a coffee or hot chocolate in one of the many cafes along the street.

One thing that can ruin the atmosphere is being the victim of a pickpocket. Just be careful as with any crowded area.

Campo Pequeno Square

Last but not least, don’t forget to visit Campo Pequeno Square. The bullring in the square is lit up with thousands of garlands along the length of the entire building, making it a truly beautiful Christmas sight. It’s definitely worth a visit.

It’s easy to get into the Christmas spirit when you see so many decorations and lights. You’ll feel like Santa Claus himself when you walk around town!
